This project explores the hinterland between documentary drama and art filmmaking, navigating the liminal space where visual and verbal elements actively shape each other. At its core, the film is an exploration of love, loss, and the ocean-deep grief that mirrors the tides of the Pembrokeshire coast. In a profound commitment to authenticity, the lead role of the daughter is performed by Welsh poet Cêt Haf, who also served as the film’s translator. As she scatters the ashes, she takes on the mantle of the mother, a movement akin to the cyclical nature of life, death, birth, and rebirth. It was essential that the story be told in the family's mother tongue; the language they speak to one another is the only language in which they could truly speak to the landscape.
Produced as an MA endeavour in Creative Practice on a micro-budget of £2,000, the film honours the ancient tradition of Celtic storytelling. In a shift from me to we, the entire production crew was comprised of neurodivergent young people. i ni is a haunting exploration of hiraeth and the sacred surrender required to navigate the waves of grief.
i ni treats grief as an ocean-deep tide that requires total surrender, utilizing the Pembrokeshire coast and the Welsh language to transform a daughter’s rite of passage into a visceral film poem about the cyclical nature of loss, longing, and belonging.
