Synopsis:

After a devastating divorce, Chanté returns home with her young son, expecting a fresh start. Instead, she finds her father's dementia has advanced far beyond what she ever feared, thrusting her into the overwhelming realities of caregiving just as she struggles to rebuild her own life.

This film is about Dementia, it deals with anticipatory grief.

Director Statement

At the heart of this story is the complex shift that happens when the people you once leaned on for guidance, comfort, and stability become the ones who now need your help. There is a quiet shock in realizing that your parents can begin to mirror your child—needing patience, reassurance, repetition, and grace. That inversion brings love, frustration, tenderness, and grief all at once. This film is important to me because it honors the emotional juggling that so many caregivers experience but rarely see reflected honestly on screen. There is the grief of letting go of what once was, while being asked—without pause—to fully show up for what is now. All of this unfolds as the protagonist is still learning how to be a mother herself, often without the support system she once relied on.

Between Then and Now lives in the messiness of life. It is challenging, heartbreaking, funny, exhausting, and deeply human. Humor plays an essential role in this story—not as an escape from the pain, but as a lifeline within it. Moments of the father’s wit and personality still shine through, reminding us of who he has always been, even as pieces of him slip away. Those flashes of humor and recognition offer hope, connection, and a sense of continuity amidst loss.

Through this film, I want to explore the many perspectives of letting go—of identity, of familiarity, of certainty—and what it means to love someone through transformation. Between Then and Now is about finding tenderness in responsibility, laughter in grief, and hope in the in between spaces where life is still very much happening.
